Wendi L. Dumbroff, MA, LPC,  was a recent guest on High On Healthy”, hosted by Richard Zwicky.

In a wide-ranging conversation, Dumbroff explored the concept of partner-blaming during conflicts in relationships.

She discussed why people often find themselves seeking the same qualities in different relationships, explaining that many individuals unknowingly repeat familiar relationship patterns in hopes of healing past experiences. She noted theories that people are driven by an unconscious attempt to repair unresolved emotional wounds.”There’s one theory that says everything we do is repair, or an attempt at repair. If someone had that very critical parent, and they married someone who’s very critical, it’s that attempt at repair.”

Wendi added that familiarity can be a powerful influence on relationship choices, even when those patterns are unhealthy. “What’s familiar is comfortable, it’s known, even if it’s uncomfortably comfortable. This could be seen as the attempt at repair.”
