Wendi L. Dumbroff, MA, LPC, was a recent guest on “The Matter of the Heart” podcast with Host Carol Olivia Adams. On the show, Dumbroff advised how practicing and integrating mindfulness into relationship dynamics can help couples communicate more effectively.

During the discussion, Dumbroff suggested that an awareness of one’s own triggers and habitual behaviors can influence decisions you make when it comes to escalating or de-escalating conflicts. “When you have awareness, you also have choice,” Dumbroff explained. “It doesn’t mean you don’t feel angry or upset, but you have a choice as to how you respond. It’s opening up some space where we get control over our emotions rather than our emotions having control over us; it’s the difference between reacting and responding.”

Dumbroff pointed out that triggers do not necessarily come from the other person within a relationship but instead from inside oneself. “Most of the time, it’s not about the other person but it’s about what gets triggered in us when something happens. It doesn’t mean the other person is right or wrong but what’s more important is ‘What am I experiencing now that this interaction has occurred?’”
