Wendi L. Dumbroff discusses when to consider couples counseling
Wendi L. Dumbroff, MA, LPC, was recently featured in a Good RX article titled, “Should You Get Couples Counseling? 7 Signs it Might be Time.” Dumbroff addressed when couples should seek counseling and the possible outcomes that might arise.
Dumbroff explained, “Keep in mind that ‘successful’ couples counseling doesn’t mean all your problems will go away. The difference is that you and your partner will now have a new set of tools and techniques to solve conflict.” She further emphasized that, “Safety is the most important thing across all contexts.”
Dumbroff expanded on her function as a therapist:
“My role is to provide an aerial view of what’s happening between people, I help couples understand what coping strategies may not be serving them well. In essence, we [therapists] hold the light in the swamp.”
She noted that starting couples therapy should be seen as a preventative measure rather than a last resort, to prevent minor issues from growing into bigger ones. Dumbroff stated that many couples grow comfortable with familiar patterns of behavior; including negative ones. These can get in the way of seeking counseling for many couples.
“People put up with something for a long time…until they can’t.”
