– Notable Couples Therapist discussed couples seeking sex therapy and mindfulness-
Wendi L. Dumbroff, MA, LPC, was a guest on ‘Wise Women @ Work’, a lifestyle podcast. Hosted by Felicia Garland, their conversation covered a wide ranges of topics from Dumbroff’s earliest career inclinations to her present day avocation as a therapist.
Dumbroff, who began her career as a pharmacist, opened up about her journey to becoming an esteemed couples and sex therapist. After starting a family, Wendi decided to revisit a long ago passion for helping others. Despite the challenges, Dumbroff returned to school and became a therapist.
As she began working with couples, she noted sexual issues played a major part of why some couples seek therapy. When discussing some of the more specific issues couples face, Dumbroff shared:
The most common issues that couples come to sex therapy for is something called discrepant desire which simply means one person wants sex more than the other person wants to have sex.
In addition, Dumbroff often touched upon mindfulness meditation, which she herself is a teacher of, and how she incorporates it into couples therapy, if appropriate.
Meditation is mindfulness. Mindfulness means that you are attending to the present moment. For partners to be able to be vulnerable with each other, that’s also where you’re going to bring in change and build intimacy and closeness.
